Baseman Design Associates and Base Press Exhibition at Marywood University

The exhibition, Design Work by Frank Baseman, opened at the Suraci Gallery at Marywood University in Scranton, PA with an Opening Reception on January 26, followed by a Gallery Talk and Pop-up Shop on January 31. All events were very well attended, and I hope a good time was had by all.

Student Work in “Interactive Packaging Design”

A new international publication, Interactive Packaging Design, by Design Media Publishing (UK) Limited features two projects from the Graphic Design Communication course, Package Design, taught by Associate Professor Maribeth Kradel-Weitzel. Both projects developed from a shoe packaging assignment that ran in the class as a collaboration with Adidas.

2018 Lancaster Letterpress Fair

An intrepid group of students from the AIGA Jefferson student group made the trek out to Lancaster, PA on a beautiful sunny day to attend the 2018 Lancaster Letterpress Fair. Over thirty vendors were displaying their wares, including Professor Frank Baseman and the work of Base Press. A good time was had by all.

 

Design Thinking Workshop Led by IBM Strategist

Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) hosted a design thinking workshop on April 5 for East Falls and Center City faculty. At the event, facilitated by Amber Atkins, lead design strategist at IBM Design for Services, attendees participated in a series of activities and learned methodologies to improve their professional and educational practice. Faculty members came from various programs across both campuses, including Occupational Therapy, Graphic Design Communication, Population Health, Landscape Architecture and Engineering. “This workshop was a great opportunity for faculty to learn about different approaches for problem framing, research and ideation across disciplines,” said Maribeth Kradel-Weitzel, Associate Professor of Graphic Design Communication, who organized the event.

 

Baseman on Design Thinking and Entrepreneurship Panel at Penn State Startup Week

Program Director and Professor of Graphic Design Communication Frank Baseman was invited to participate on a panel discussion on Design Thinking and Entrepreneurship during Penn State Startup Week at (his alma mater) Penn State University, University Park campus. The panel was moderated by Kelleann Foster, Director of the Stuckeman School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at Penn State. Frank was joined on the panel by Maggie Hanson, Visiting Assistant Professor, Landscape Architecture, Penn State University; and Dan Rowland, Creative Director of Rowland Creative, State College, PA.

New Impressions 2018

Professor and Program Director Frank Baseman was honored to be included in the upcoming exhibition, New Impressions 2018, with a recent letterpress print.

ONYX Shoe Packaging Project Wins Graphis New Talent Merit Award

The ONYX Shoe Packaging project designed by senior-year student Paige Graff has won a Merit Award in the 2018 Graphis New Talent Design Annual. The project was completed in the Package Design course taught by Associate Professor Maribeth Kradel-Weitzel in Fall 2017.

On January 14, 2018 Bluecadet’s website, Modern Monsters, was named site of the day on the Awwwards website. Adjunct faculty member Elizabeth Russell was the project manager and led the content development of the experience.

AIGA Jefferson at 2017 Lancaster Letterpress Fair

This past weekend, a bunch of active AIGA Jefferson Graphic Design students traveled to Lancaster to attend the 2017 Lancaster Letterpress Fair, hosted by the Heritage Press Museum and the .918 Club. They got to support letterpress professionals and craftsmen in the area, along with Professor and Program Director (and proprietor of Base Press), Frank Baseman. Students were able to experience a wide range of printing techniques, such as letterpress for bookmarks and coasters, and well as screen printing a Letterpress Fair poster. Some amazing treasures students took home supporting local letterpress businesses included notebooks, stationery, cards, wood blocks from Moore Wood Type and Virgin Wood Type,  and the Ladies of Letterpress book by Kseniya Thomas and  Jessica C. White.

The Bridges of Beth Emmott

Adjunct Instructor, Beth Emmott, currently has an oil painting, “Wissahickon Bridge: Summer” on exhibit at Imperfect Gallery’s Sixth Annual Germantown Show. The painting is one of a series she is working on entitled “Bridges, not Barriers” in which she explores bridges that connect us.
