Make Every Mark Count: The Dennis Kuronen Scholarship Fund

“Make Every Mark Count…” That was a phrase that Dennis used to say all the time; it was one of the many “Dennis-isms” we came to know—and love—coming from him. The Dennis Kuronen Scholarship Fund is named in loving memory of Professor Dennis Kuronen.


PhilaU GDC Blog Wins Design Awards

The Blog for the Graphic Design Communication program at Philadelphia University (yes, this blog!)—has won two design awards in national design competitions. The Blog was awarded a Merit Award in the fourteenth Annual How Interactive Design Awards Competition, as well as an American Web Design Award from GD USA American Web Design Awards Competition. 


GeoGraphics: Design, Education and the Transnational Terrain

Program Director and Associate Professor, Frank Baseman, made a presentation, “Cultural Immersion in the Dominican Republic,” at the GeoGraphics: Design, Education and the Transnational Terrain, AIGA Design Education Conference, Honolulu. Hawaii. He was also a Moderator of the Design Ideas, Local Perspectives presentations.

AIGA Philly Mentorship Program

Kick-off for AIGA Philly’s successful Mentorship Program was held at the organization’s office on Front Street in Old City on October 25. The program—now in its third year—pairs seasoned designers with young design students or practitioners within their first five years of practice for a year-long mentoring experience.

Eric Karnes in Communication Arts

Work by Assistant Professor Eric Karnes was recently published in the 2012 Communication Arts Design Annual. The featured piece was a promotional poster for Tree Scout, a broker of rare trees for architects, developers, and homeowners.

Stacie Rohrback Visit and Assessment Presentation

Stacie Rohrbach, Associate Professor in the School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University, recently visited the PhilaU Graphic Design Communication program, and also gave a wonderful presentation and workshop on Assessment.


Designing Information Book by Joel Katz Now Available

The PhilaU Graphic Design Communication program is very proud to announce that the book written by (our very own) Adjunct Professor, Joel Katz, Designing Information: Human Factors and Common Sense in Information Design, is now available in bookstores as well as on Amazon


Graphic Design Students Give Voice to Student Voices Campaign

Graphic Design Communication students, Annelise Babula, Dan Dinsmore and Jewell Richardson, recently collaborated with the Office of the Provost to bring a student campaign to life. Under the direction of Frank Baseman, Program Director and Associate Professor, “Student Voices” began with a T-shirt design, but grew to be more. 


Ken Barber of House Industries Conducts Hand-Lettering Workshop

Ken Barber of House Industries fame—one of the premier hand-letterers in the country— visited the Graphic Design Communication program at Philadelphia University to conduct an exclusive hands-on workshop with a small group of current students, alums and faculty.
